IVF country guides

IVF abroad at a glance

There is no single country or fertility clinic that is right for everyone.

Your options may depend on:

  • and .

Fertility treatment is also regulated differently around the world. The UK fertility regulator, the HFEA, advises patients considering treatment overseas to research the country's laws and regulatory system as well as the individual clinic.

That's why comparing IVF abroad should involve much more than comparing a headline price or success percentage.

Why do people travel abroad for IVF?

People cross borders for fertility treatment for many different reasons.

For some, cost is important. Treatment may be less expensive in another country even after flights and accommodation are considered.

Others travel because a particular treatment, donor programme or reproductive option is more readily available elsewhere.

People may also look abroad because of:

Shorter waiting times Some countries and clinics may have greater availability of egg or sperm donors.

Different treatment access Fertility laws vary considerably between countries, particularly around donor conception, treatment for single patients, same-sex couples, embryo testing and surrogacy.

Specialist expertise Some patients travel to clinics experienced in particular fertility conditions, recurrent implantation failure, recurrent pregnancy loss, donor conception or complex IVF cases.

More choice Looking internationally can significantly increase the number of clinics and specialists available to you.

But greater choice makes reliable comparison even more important.

Which countries are popular for IVF abroad?

Patients travel to many destinations for fertility treatment.

Some commonly researched destinations include:

IVF in Spain

Spain has a large assisted reproduction sector and established legislation governing fertility treatment. Spanish law allows adult women to access assisted reproductive techniques regardless of marital status or sexual orientation. Gamete donation is anonymous under Spanish law.

IVF in Greece

Greece has developed a significant international fertility sector and has a national authority overseeing medically assisted reproduction.

Greek law permits medically assisted reproduction up to age 54 in women, although patients over 50 require specific authorisation from the National Authority.

IVF in the USA

The United States has a large fertility sector with hundreds of ART clinics.

The CDC collects treatment and outcome information from reporting ART clinics and publishes standardised clinic success-rate information, giving patients an important independent source when researching clinics.

IVF in the UK

UK fertility treatment is regulated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).

Patients can use HFEA data alongside IVFbabble's guides and Babble Connect to research treatment options, clinics, inspection information, patient experiences and success-rate data.

How much does IVF abroad cost?

The cost of IVF varies considerably between countries and between clinics within the same country. A headline IVF price may not represent the final cost of treatment.

When comparing quotes, ask whether the price includes:

  • consultations
  • scans and blood tests
  • stimulation medication
  • egg collection
  • anaesthesia or sedation
  • laboratory charges
  • ICSI where required
  • blastocyst culture
  • embryo transfer
  • embryo freezing
  • embryo storage
  • donor costs
  • genetic testing
  • frozen embryo transfer
  • additional investigations.

Then add the practical costs of travelling for treatment, including flights, accommodation, transfers, insurance and potentially making more than one trip.

How do I choose a fertility clinic abroad?

Start with your needs rather than a clinic's marketing.

Ask:

Is the clinic appropriately licensed or authorised? Find out which national or regional authority regulates fertility treatment and confirm the clinic's status where possible.

Does the clinic regularly treat patients like me? Ask about experience with your age group, diagnosis and proposed treatment.

What exactly is included in the price? Request a written, itemised treatment plan.

How are success rates calculated? A percentage alone tells you very little. Ask whether the figure represents:

  • pregnancy or live birth
  • per embryo transfer or treatment cycle
  • fresh or frozen transfer
  • own eggs or donor eggs
  • a particular age group
  • cumulative success across several transfers.

Success statistics can look very different depending on the measure used and the patient population being treated.

Who will manage my treatment? Find out whether you will have a named doctor or coordinator and who you contact when you return home.

What happens if treatment does not go according to plan? Understand cancellation policies, emergency arrangements, frozen embryo storage and what happens if another cycle or transfer is required.

Can I trust IVF clinic success rates?

Success rates can be useful — but only when you know what is being measured.

A clinic treating predominantly younger patients may naturally report different results from one specialising in older or more medically complex patients.

Similarly, donor-egg success rates should not be directly compared with IVF using a patient's own eggs.

The HFEA specifically advises patients considering treatment abroad to be cautious about unusually high success claims because clinics and countries may present data differently.

Never choose a fertility clinic on one percentage alone.

Look at the clinic, laboratory, medical team, treatment approach, patient population, independent regulatory information and how transparent the clinic is about its data.

IVF abroad over 40

Age is one of the most important factors affecting IVF outcomes when using your own eggs. But treatment access also varies between countries and clinics.

Some destinations permit treatment at ages when another country's clinics may not, while donor-egg treatment may provide another option for some patients.

If you are considering IVF abroad over 40, compare:

  • country age regulations
  • individual clinic age policies
  • own-egg versus donor-egg options
  • success data for your age group
  • maternal health assessment requirements
  • embryo-transfer policies.

Egg donation abroad

Egg donation is one of the main reasons some patients explore international fertility treatment. But donor rules differ substantially.

Depending on the country, donation may be:

  • anonymous
  • identity-release
  • known
  • subject to donor age restrictions
  • governed by limits on the number of families or children created.

Before choosing a destination, understand what information a donor-conceived child may legally be able to access in the future.

IVF abroad for single women and same-sex couples

Access to fertility treatment is not uniform internationally.

Some countries provide broad access to assisted reproduction while others restrict certain treatments according to marital status, sex or family structure.

The Global IVF Access tools on Babble Connect by IVFbabble are designed to help you understand which destinations may offer the treatment you are considering.

IVF Abroad FAQs

Is IVF cheaper abroad?

It can be, but this depends on the country, clinic, medication and treatment required. Always compare the complete cost rather than the advertised starting price and include travel and accommodation.

Is IVF abroad safe?

Many people undergo fertility treatment overseas safely. Regulation and clinical standards vary, however, so investigate the clinic and the regulatory framework of the country carefully.

What is the best country for IVF abroad?

There isn't one country that is right for everyone. The most appropriate options depend on your diagnosis, age, treatment, donor requirements, legal eligibility, budget and preferences.

Can I have IVF abroad over 45?

Potentially. Age laws and clinic policies differ between countries. Some countries allow treatment into the late 40s or early 50s subject to medical assessment and other requirements.

Can single women have IVF abroad?

Yes, in many countries, including Spain. However, access differs internationally, so check the current rules in the destination you are considering.

How should I compare fertility clinics abroad?

Consider regulation, medical expertise, laboratory standards, patient experience, costs, communication, donor policies and success rates relevant to your own age and treatment rather than relying on a single headline statistic.
