Regulated by Danish Medicines Agency (Lægemiddelstyrelsen)
Operates under EU tissue & cell directives and GDPR.
The European Sperm Bank (ESB) operates under strict Danish and EU regulations, including EU Directive 2006/17/EC, requiring comprehensive donor screening (genetic, blood, urine) and data storage for 30 years. ESB complies with national legislation on family limits, generally setting a worldwide limit of 75 families per donor, with lower limits (e.g., 25) in specific markets.
Distribution & Usage
Donor sperm is only distributed to approved "Designated Clinics" or licensed healthcare professionals. As of July 1, 2018, Danish law forbids shipping straws directly to private addresses for home insemination.
Family Limits & Traceability
ESB uses "Pregnancy Slots" to track and limit the number of families per donor to meet national regulations. When a donor approaches the limit in a specific country, remaining straws are restricted to families who already have a child from that donor.
Donor Screening & Health
Donors undergo rigorous testing, including chromosome analysis, and a quarantine period for sperm samples to ensure safety.
Privacy & ID Release
Data is kept for at least 30 years. For ID-release donors, children can typically obtain the donor's identity at age 18, depending on the regulations in the country of birth.
Data Protection
Personal data is processed in accordance with GDPR, including provisions for managing donor-conceived individuals' requests to contact donors.
Legal Status
Under the Sperm Donors Act, donors have no legal obligations, parental rights, or financial responsibility for children born from their donations.
